#51: The Non-Show Show

Everything goes wrong. That’s just the way it is. I talk about gay marriage, all the paper work I get from H’s school and how I really need the shower door to hinge on the right.

Thanks to BayCHI for having me come up and speak about podcasting. It was a lot of fun.

The super cool superhero song was “Superhuman” by NU-TRA.

  1. Dan, Gays just want equal rights. They want to be allowed to marry in the same sense that they want to be allowed to receive mail, and drive a car. There’s no difference, and anybody who says otherwise is either a bigot, or still thinks being gay is some sort of choice. It really makes my blood boil. It’s legal in Canada now, and it’s such a non issue. The lights didn’t go out; people went about their lives and nobody died of shock. I’d say if your rant loses you any listeners, good riddance. Good show by the way.

  2. I haven’t even listened to the show, but I gotta add my two cents. New Zealand also allowed same-sex “civil unions” recently (exactly the same rights as marriage, just without the actualy M word, to placate the Christians), and we also haven’t exploded or anything.

Such a non-issue in my mind. Why should what you do in your own house have any bearing on whether your partner can (e.g.) make decisions on your medical care, or inherit your wealth?

  3. Ditto to Dave & Ben! i actually think they should be called ‘marriages’ outright & have all the same rights & have gay people able to marry in church or wherever…but baby steps.

However….even religious people who disagree with you are surely intelligent enough to say ‘to each their own’? and not boycott you. They listen to your show, they’ve got style….

  4. I saw this on a MySpace bulletin and I just had to post it on your blog…

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong

    1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

    2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    3) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

    4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

    5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were
allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears’ 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

    6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.

    7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.

    9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

    10) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

(one of the saddest parts about our society is that…these arguements, before the humourous common sense, are the real reasons why people can’t accept gay marriages.)

(and they always go “straight”(haha) to No.10…which, funnily enough to me, is probably the last thing a gay couple is thinking about…while the “straight people,” who are arguing against gay marriage, seem to be all over it. how interesting.)

  5. hey dan, for some reason when I download the file for show #51 I can’t get it to play in my windows media player-says I dont have the correct codecs for it.

this is the first time I’ve had an issue w/ one of your shows. any clue what’s wrong?

  6. Thanks for the Non-Show Show… I do have to say that if we start accepting gay marriage, we’ll be giving homosexuality some kind of stamp of approval. Then, gays will have all kinds of jobs where they interact with straights all the time… how uncomfortable will that be when your florist, or your hairdresser, or that guy doing ballet, or the wrestler are actually gay?! Man, that would be just weird…

I say, let the gays and lesbians get married. Why should straights have to do all the hard work of being in a legally committed relationship? Our straight institution needs a little brightening up, anyway.

  7. I don’t get the big deal either Dan. I live in Vermont, home of the “Civil Union”. We went through the whole debate thing years ago. One fellow I know said “Then continuing that logic, I will marry my chicken”. I replied “How can we be sure that the chicken is consenting?”

Life has gone on since then. The bigots are still bigots. The lesbian couples I know now have legal rights denied them previously, which is a good thing and now there is no going back. My 9 y.o. daughter has a classmate with “3 mothers” (Sorry, I don’t know the details) and her world hasn’t been rocked and she isn’t confused.

Recently though, at the doctor’s office, she did see a pink triange sticker with “This is a safe zone”. “What’s that sticker mean?” I explained that it meant that someone could talk openly about being gay without being judged or harassed. She understood about gay people — it was the hatred of the judgemental “Christian” folks that confused her. “Why do they care Mom?” I was at a loss for words. It’s easy to explain two people loving each other. It’s tough to explain hatred.

  8. By the way, I saw Ontario Marriot, and I was thinking COOL! , Dan is going to be in Ontario, Canada. That only about 4 hours! I can do that drive easy.

I was majorly bummed to see it was Ontario Califoria.

Please consider a trip to the right coast sometime!

  9. It was awful listening to you on WJPZ radio so early in the goddamn morning. Thank GOD I can now get ‘The Pill’ on demand — and listen to it at a more reasonable hour.

(I just signed up for the podcast. Especially since I am now also a stay-at-home Dad — with a 6-year-old boy — I figured it was a must-listen!)

  10. Woohoo Dan!

Taking on the religious wrong with contentious issue #1 (of what, 50? 100? I’ve lost count). Equal rights are just that. I finished reading Under the Banner of Heaven today — talk about freak show. None of the gays and lesbians I’ve had the priviledge to know can hold a ‘torch’ to the FLDS crowd, not to mention the normal followers of Joseph Smith.

    Bazooka – excellent re-post – Thanks.
