I flew to Portland and back. Casually. To talk about blogging and podcasting to the “water people” of the northern/western area. Well, what I feared would be a serious and rather boring trip was a lot of fun (and I now want to live in Portland, OR). Well, there were three things standing in the way of me getting a good nights’ sleep, so I got about 20 minutes of sleep the night before. Still, the “session” was fun, I had lunch at a super cool old school-house-turned-hotel/restaurant/theater/club.
Be very careful when you’re about to look out the window of the plane, depending on who you’re sitting near.
Klein’s Deli, Potrero Hill, I’ll miss you.
I think I made a realization while being grilled by my daughter about what beings are make believe and which beings are “real.” I just can’t help wondering if the fact that princesses are real is messing up our female kids, big time.

The crazy thing about flying using different airlines is that they all have their own rules. So, carrying something on might be permitted by Airline A but not B. I have just read the instructions to travelers at Portland airport. What have we come to when gel filled shoe inserts are a security breach but gel filled bras are not! It’s well known by anyone other than the authorities that any terrorist organisation insists on “clean skins”, i.e regular joes with no history or anything unusual.
I loved the line too about making sure your children don’t joke about bombs or guns. My 5 year old spends most of his time making imitation guns out of his hands or anything really and enacting Power Rangers and generally making “laser” or gun sounds, like we all used to do when we were young. And now I could be fined or imprisoned?!
Tell you what, I’ll take the hint and stay away as traveling to the USA is just too much trouble. About 5 years ago we were in transit off a 13 hour flight from New Zealand en route to another 12 hour flight from LA to the UK, and yet we were still required to clear immigration – only 3 hours with a 7 month pregnant wife! Never again.
