#214: Hudson Uses a Payphone

h_in_studio_7-10

My son Hudson joins me in Studio G to discuss art school summer camp, channel surfing, buying and naming a dog, the Karate Kid movies and finally getting a chance to use a payphone*…

Premium version: Fifty-four minutes

payphone

*a “payphone” is a sort of steam-punk device where one can make a phone call by inserting a coin into a metal box.  The coin falls inside the box, tripping a series of levers that activate a mechanism that connects to an ancient wired telecommunication system.  The user puts a heavy molded plastic “receiver” to their head.  Sound waves are sent to the user’s ear via a series of color-coded wires that connect directly from the phone system to a speaker housed in the receiver.  Amazing, isn’t it?  When we first saw one handing in the halls of OTIS (art college) we assumed it was someone’s senior project left on display.  It was only when Hudson touched it that I remembered that the country used to be littered with payphones, most of which you would never dare let an eleven year old touch without immediately rushing him to the nearest men’s room/hospital.

  1. I am preparing to have my toy foo foo dog bite your butts upon entering. Trashing little dogs in uncalled for.

  2. Your TIVO not pause live TV then? Pretty much every Hard Disk recorder here does – perfect for those little interruptions! It still seems like magic to be able to do it, even though I know the machine is just taping from the moment I pause.

  3. What are you referring to, Wayne? I don’t remember what we said…

We can pause our Tivo whether it’s officially “recording” or not. It automatically records whatever you’re watching so you can pause/FF/rewind back to either the beginning of the program or to the point where you changed to that channel.

  4. Dan,

Old age is catching up on you…you were saying that your wife was randomly hitting channels when the kids came in the room when you were watching “adult” TV – I was just saying, why don’t you hit pause?

Our 6 weeks of hell with the kids started today. Started great with seeing Toy Story 3 in 3D. I am such a massive TS fan and I was blown away. The summer can only get worse now!!
