#5: Mad Man, Happy Man

I fit this one in while the kids are watching Shrek 2. Yes, it’s day 3 of my son being home from school because of teacher conferences and I’m getting a little nuts. You’ve got to check out fuckthesouth.com, and if you want that great Bush letter with all the religious quotes, e-mail me and it’ll be sent automatically. I got e-mail from Peter Riley from Saintface, so I HAD to play their latest single. I also talked about living in England, meeting Meg Ryan, and the upcoming copyright strangle. No more fastforwarding through the commercials? Okay, I just won’t watch TV…

  1. Dan, I wanted to comment on this episode … I know it’s been a while since you cast it but I’m just getting around to listening to your archives.

While I find much of what you say entertaining, I am left perplexed by your reference to f***thesouth.com.

You call this website “GREAT?” Really?

You’re promoting a website which demonstrates clear hatred toward the south? Really?

We should’ve let them go when they wanted to leave?

Do you realize who it was that attempted to secede? All too often we lack historical perspective. It was democrats who defended to their very death the “peculiar institution” of slavery. It was they who took this country into our darkest hour and it was they who wished to secede. Should we have let them go? Should we have let them continue slavery? Really? Is that how we democrats show our compassion for minorities? Is this who we show our tolerance? Is this how we demonstrate our passion for diverse and thoughtful discourse? There are those in our ranks today who suggest that the south should go. Unbelievable!

I’m offended by the attitude this website displays particularly because it is so representative of so very many northeast liberals … and apparently west coast liberals, too. Compassion is not one of our strengths, that’s for sure. And for a group of people who make tolerance our bedrock issue we sure have that attribute in extremely short supply.

At least what this site lacks in tolerance it makes up for in vulgarity and complete lack of eloquence …

Rather than lash out at those who won the election, we’d be far better served by looking at where we’re out of step with most of America. We’re in the minority and we look like very poor losers. Not very attractive. We put up one of the poorest candidates imaginable and then get angry when President Bush wins. This was really a surprise to anyone? Come on … There’s a large part of me that’s glad we lost. We didn’t deserve to win, not the way we ran this campaign and not with the candidate we fielded.

Perhaps you saw this website as funny. That’s sad. That’s really sad. Is that the type of attitude you’d be convenying to your children? Would you even suggest to your children that this type of hateful, hate-filled diatribe is funny? I’m disappointed … In one episode you extol your son’s racially diverse school, calling it “glorious.” How do you reconcile that attitude with your promotion of this hateful website?

I’m enjoying your show, but I’m also going to tell you when you’re wrong. On this one … you’re wrong. It isn’t funny. Hate speech is never funny except to those who hate. I would hope that isn’t really you but by promoting this website in your podcast you certainly make it appear that you do.

You can do better. You talk about wanting to make your show kid-friendly but you failed miserably with this podcast.

  2. Thanks for your comment. And, frankly, I agree with 95% of what you say. The other 5% is just me nitpicking…(is that how you spell that?)

I think I said in a podcast AFTER this one that I was beginning to realize that I was still making too many sweeping generalizations about people, groups, states, etc. and that podcasting and TBP was helping me see that. In my post-election dismay I was still, a couple weeks later, lashing out and finding humor in all the wrong places.

Also, you caught me. I DO seem to have many unfounded North East/West Coast biases against the South that I’ve been taught and that have been reenforced over the years by the media. Since I read your post I’ve thought more about the people I know personally that are from the South, and about the little time that I’ve spent there, trying to draw my own conclusions.

Now, all that being said, some part of me still finds that site funny. It is the venom with which it is written, the voice that it is written in, the comittment to the message that I find striking. I can’t apologize for finding something funny anymore than I can apologize for finding a song catchy or a woman attractive, since it is not a choice I’m making, but rather a reaction I’m having. Still, it does make me wonder, especially after getting your post, WHY I find it funny. The journey toward self knowledge is a long one…

And, let’s all keep in mind that TBP is, in essence, a comedy show. Sooner or later I will offend everyone. Just give me enough time and enough rope.

I’ll address all this at length during my next podcast.

Thanks for writing, and thanks for listening. I appreciate your not letting me off easily. That is what the show is about.

(I hope this all make sense. I haven’t eaten my dinner yet.)

  3. Dan – Extremely well said. I like your style. Your willingness to share your process of self-examination is enticing. You keep ‘casting and I’ll keep listening …
