#252: Modern Art is a Con

When we were in upstate New York, we decided to go visit Dia: Beacon to see some modern art.  We saw some canvases and some florescent lighting fixtures and a couple of army blankets.  Mind blowing.  Not in its’ mind-blowing artfulness, but in its’ mind-blowing ability to inspire me to ridicule it instantly.  Don’t worry, we later went to StormKing and saw a large floating Roy Lichtenstein, which, frankly, made it all better.

We were in Chelsea, a predominantly gay New York City neighborhood, the night New York announced they had legalized gay marriage.    I didn’t sleep that night.  Was it because all the local gay couples were going crazy in the streets?  No.  It was because I was worried that the rental car would be towed and that the dude screaming at 4am was going to slaughter his girlfriend.

If you want to see some real modern art, check out friend of the show Michael Elliot Hawkins Burgos.

  1. Dan, there are many reasons why guys like us are not naturally happy. And Modern Art is one of them. I agree. Complete bullshit.

I had a free afternoon recently and spent a few hours round some galleries. One I went in had a girl sitting outside and she said to me as I was about to go through to the gallery “just to advise you Sir, some of the imagery is sexually explicit”.

Hmmm, I thought, let’s see what we have here. I walked in and firstly I was surprised that the rooms were completely dark, except for the video “installations” in the centre.

I had to check when I went out that it wasn’t some kind of S & M club. No, definitely a gallery. Amazing!

I did see this recently though. Very clever. I’d say this is definitely art.

Finally, no discussion on modern art could be complete without this. Good old Serge.
