About Pokemon;
My kid isn’t the right age yet, but I think I understand the phenomenon. I’ve seen several episodes and can see why kids would like it.
It empowers them.
It (the episodes) treats the viewer with respect and doesn’t dumb it down (relatively speaking). And the moral of the stories looks to be ok by me. The stories are also lot more interesting than the average Disney stuff.
Here in Finland they cut off the part of the episode with the song about all the characters. (Via consumer protection office pressure). I guess that part works kids up too much 🙂
It’s still peer pressure that creates the real addiction. Not the show itself. (IMHO)
One could do a lot worse than Pokemon.
My nephew is 10 and is STIll into Pokemon. Now it is on the gameboy. My son is 1.5 years old and I am trying like hell to keep my son away from shows like that.
Sesame Street is getting commercialized too (ELMO), But there will be a time he will be to old for it, and move on to something else.
Train videos and Motorcycles are what I put on the TV when I need a minute to cook dinner. I hope I can keep that up.
Wow, you are a bitter man. 🙂 My boys are 8 and 5. They watch Pokeman and other Cartoon Network stuff and also PBS cartoons. The main message I get from Pokeman is the friendship the show promotes between the characters and the Pokemon critters. My oldest is also into games and sports, and he’s the top reader, math and geography student in his class. So I don’t see how Pokemon has hurt his development. My 5 year old kinda likes it but he prefers other shows. Actually he prefers to play and use his imagination and play his drums.
Before I had kids I hated Barney and shows like that. I was always saying I would never let my kids watch shows I didn’t like. But guess what? Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s bad for my kids. Actually I watch cartoons with my kids all the time. We love Cartoon Network. Sure there are the more grown up stuff I’d never let them watch but not just because the show is “commercialized”. Wow sorry for the long rant. Looking forward to the next show.
Hi,
Here in Austria we have 3 TV-Stations (ORF1, ORF2, ATV+) but we get all the German and some international ones via Cable and Satellite.
We had more Pokemon a few years ago but today I could only find one show/day.
We also have Pay-TV but I’m not sure what they broardcast at the moment.
I scanned some pages of my TV-guide and marked the Pokemon show. So you get an idea what is on in Austria.
I for my part will go and watch Stargate Atlantis now. 🙂
P.S.: Pokemon means or is short for “Pocket Monster”. Says a lot about the show, doesn’t ist.
Im sorry, in the preview everthing looked fine. I hope the links work now as they should. If not, I give up.

Lol. Just listened to your cast for the first time!
I know what you mean about Pokemon. Hell, I have some friends (22-24yr olds) that are into it!
I remember an old carton called ‘Captain Planet’ that was an attempt at educating children about economic, no er, (wouldn’t that be fun, look out kids its Dr. Demand and his evil side kick Supply!) ecological issues. However, it didn’t work out and got axed pretty quickly.
Anyway, just wanted to say I liked the show and if you haven’t had any yet, you’ve got UK listeners :p
Pokemon is fairly innocent compared with most other cartoons. Violence is very very mild.
