I heard this week that fellow podcast-pioneers CRONCAST have called it quits. Wow. Kris and Betsy Smith started podcasting almost exactly when I did and Croncast is considered one of the early shows that helped popularize podcasting in the dark ages. Like me, they even went to a pay-subscription model of some kind, but I’m not sure when. I don’t know the details but I understand completely. Podcasting for podcasting sake is a unique endeavor, and you spend a lot of time (7 years) putting your life out there for the entertainment and reflection of others. It’s gratifying and it’s tough and I feel like there are fewer and fewer of us around who simply open up the mic and open up their lives. They’ll be missed.
Facebook may have ruined this podcast. All the people from my past, who had taken on somewhat mythical purportions in my mind, are now reduced to being real living, breathing people who are getting on with their lives just fine without me.
Also, frankly, I”m not sure I’m ready for my peers to have adult children. Yes, I know that’s an oxymoron, but you know what I mean. “Adult Offspring.” Especially not ready for them to have “Hot Adult Offspring.” As soon as we all have “(Hot) Adult Offspring” that means that we have been promoted to “Old People.” Holy crap.

Hi Dan,
Another enjoyable listen.
Your honesty is appreciated, … and understood.
Every show you do is worth listening to, some of them are gems on top of that.
Keep on being who you are, please.
I have undergone something of an ‘age reversal’ this past year, in contrast, however, I totally relate to your angst.
I wish I was still podcasting. I hope to return. Until then I will vicariously follow people such as yourself (actually mostly you).
Keep on keeping on, dude.
Cheers!
Haven’t even listened yet but you better not be contemplating leaving us – DON’T DARE. You have been warned LOL
Me too RZ. Though a large unselfish part of me would recommend to Dan that he go get a “proper” job, not least to create more material!
Wow, listened now and feel compelled to reassure you Dan that, at least from my perspective, I don’t ever expect you to talk about the past, or frankly any particular topic. That’s the whole point, this is about your life and you sharing it with us, good or bad. That ex subscriber just has not got the point of the show, which is therapy for you and interesting for us. Tell you what I like a lot about the discussions – you are at least 10,000 miles from me but the issues you have are incredibly similar, so there are a lot of life lessons too.
There are sometimes that I get really mad, not at you, but with you, or the way that I perceive your wife breaks your balls, but that would never translate into me stopping listening. You’re a great guy Dan, with a lot to offer and more people should appreciate that.
Keep it going, we love you!
On the Facebook thing, that is a great observation. But you know what, Zuckerberg doesn’t need you to make him rich, there is a choice, you could just quit. I promise you, a life without Twitter or Facebook will free up a lot of your time. I left a few years ago and have never regretted it. It is the most powerful legal drug I have ever seen. wish I had invented it, but I don’t need to be a dealer or user.

My take on this is that since this “patron” has been “paying” for this entertainment he (guessing) has forgotten this is not something scripted for his entertainment but someone’s real life. The world has become a place where everyone can be entertained 24/7 and nothing real should creep in. Know what “patron” – feelings, emotions, loss of job, fights, happy times, etc. are all part of real life and no matter how much you try to get away from it you will still find it – in comedy shows or even in a podcast where you follow your host and commiserate and maybe even laugh out loud sometimes while you are in the produce section of Publix.
The honesty factor is what made me a listener and keeps me a listener. My life is real – there is laughter and there is pain. A lot of time there is more discomfort than jocularity. I relate to Dan. If this listener feels that this is too real than he is one who spends his life trying to make the world believe his life is as great as his Facebook page.
Ok Dan – something off of the subject. You were talking about hot moms at the park and how much privacy a person can expect in public.

If the link fails just google ridiculous photogenic guy. Dude was running a race and – bam. Don’t think he saw that coming.
You should do some of your ideas on all the teacher/students relations that have been in the news lately especially since your school employs all the hot teachers. My daughter will be in high school next year and my son graduates this year. (Yes I am from the South and started a little younger than you!) I have seen my son’s Govt teacher and no man that good looking should be in a high school. LOL How ’bout teacher/parent relationsips! 🙂
Hi Dan, I am going to echo my love of the show like the other commenters. I love listening to your show I listen for your wonderful honesty. I do enjoy your looks back at growing up, but I also like hearing about your day to day everything. I feel like the show for me is more like an audio diary to a small group of friends… that I’m happy to be a part of. I feel like in listening to this show I have grown with your children and with you. 🙂 I started listening to this podcast while I was moving out of my freshmen dorm in undergrad and now I’m going into my 4th year of graduate school. Just do what you do Dan!
